There are many different styles when it comes to the curio display cabinet. Your decision on what type to get will probably depend largely upon your needs and current home décor, how much available space you have and how much you can afford to pay. It is always a good idea to plan ahead and research the different types of curios available before you set out to shop for one. If you have what you want clearly in mind it will make it much more simple to make choices about the different cabinets you come across.
Perhaps one of the first things to decide is whether you want a floor standing unit or a wall curio. Wall curios are great when you do not have a lot of floor space. You can attach them to a wall, either above another cabinet or on their own yet still have plenty of floor space for other items. Another good choice when you are tight on space is the corner curio display. This is designed to neatly fit into a corner. It is often an irregular shape so that it can sit back into the corner yet still show both sides and the front of the display. Oftentimes these are made to sit on the floor; however you can also buy wall corner curios. If you live in a small apartment or you already have a lot of furniture in your room, you may want to look at either of these types.
You will also need to decide whether to go with the traditional style of display cabinet or a contemporary unit. Traditional curios are usually made from a dark hard wood. Typically they have either glass or wood shelving and the two sides and front are made from glass with a wood frame. Contemporary curios, on the other hand often feature sharp angles and unusual designs. They are frequently made from nontraditional materials such as light woods, plastic or metal. If your décor reflects a more modernistic style, with sharp lines and minimalistic coloring you may want to choose one of the contemporary kinds. If, however, your home is decorated in a more traditional style you should probably choose the wood curio display cabinet.
Aside from these choices, there are other decisions that will need to be made, although often they are secondary in nature. For example, you may be able to choose between wood shelving and glass shelves. You will also need to decide on the basic design of the outside of the curio display cabinet and whether it features carved sections or is plain.
